Biography

Ricky Mastro

Filmmaker, programmer

Ricky Mastro is one of Brazil’s first self-proclaimed LGBTQIA+ filmmakers. He has a degree in Cinema and a Master's degree on LGBTQIA+ character visibility on screen, and got his latest degree from École Nationale Supérieure d’Audiovisuel in Toulouse, France. After his Drama degree from the University of Washington, he went back to Brazil, where he worked for MIXBrasil Film Festival, G magazine, and as an electro music events organizer for the LGBTQIA+ community. 

Over the years, Ricky has written ten LGBTQIA+ short films, including a segment in Fucking Different São Paulo, which premiered at the Berlinale in 2010. His first feature film, 7 Minutes (2020), was distributed worldwide.
Ricky is actively involved in the LGBTQIA+ festival circuit, and in 2014 he was on the jury for the Queer Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. He is the programmer for DIGO - Goiás International Festival of Sexual and Gender Diversity since its second edition in 2015, and he is the founder of Recifest (LGBT+ Festival of Recife, Brazil). Along with Joao Federici, he co-founded the project Mostra Queer Brasil, which is launched at Oslo/Fusion 2024.
He is currently in development of two feature films, Giulia and The Invisible, as well as a series about LGBTQIA+ youth in Brazil, Our Hood.
